Today, a business selling goods to the public needs to tell them about what is 
for sale, and advertising, whether in newspapers or on TV, is the best modern 
means．But what is the best way to advertise, and is there a technique for making the
 best use of advertising? Here are some basic principles for you to refer to.

(1)How much to spend?

As a general principle, 3% of turnover．Studies have shown that this amount is not so large that it damages the 
business by using up money needed to re-put into the business or to cover the company's daily expenses, 
nor is it so small that it fails to buy effective advertising．

(2)When to spend it?

Expenditure of money should have to do with the highs and lows of the business．In other words, the advertising budget in a retail business(零售业) should be matched and spent in proportion to(与……成比例) the business being achieved, and at the time it is being generated(产生，发生)．This is because advertising maximises the interest in the goods which sell.

The important principle to get right is: ADVERTISING SHOULD BE USED

(3)What to put in your ad?

Look around your business or shop and see what kind of business you are doing

and 50% in hardware, then June advertising should show that proportion．At least half the advertising should be spent on hardware．If, in spring, 50% of turnover is in paint, the 50% of advertising should show that.

To be successful, you have to be prepared to push yourself and your 
business beyond what you think its capacity is．And advertising can do that.
